A LOW IMPACT VEHICLE FOR AN ALTERNATIVE HARVESTING LOGISTICS

“There would be no forest science without deficiency in wood supplies. This science is only a child of necessity or need” (Cotta, 1816). By increasingly considering the lifecycle of a forest, rather than just taking what we need, we are taking care of today’s and tomorrows woodlands. One of the methods for managing a healthy forest is called ‘thinning’. It consist in removing carefully selected trees, in order to decrease competition between the remaining trees. The goal was to design a harvester having a limited impact on forest during thining.

The Rottne VH-8 is a light weight concept vehicle, exploring the possibility to process and harvest trees vertically, in order to avoid damages to the surrounding trees. The HV-8 is also able to cary a few logs, in order to limit the back and forth in the forest and reduce the back and forth damaging the ground.
